You can start getting excited about the upcoming off-road exploration game from Funselektor Labs and Strelka Games, with the first Over The Hill gameplay trailer released as part of the Triple-i Initiative, during which a group of indie studios banded together to share news and premieres.
The game is due to arrive first on Steam for the PC in 2025, letting you 1-4 players drive various off-road vehicles from the 1960s through to the 1980s in an interconnected world with day and night cycles, dynamic weather and terrain deformation. If Art of Rally reimagined rallying games with a distinct style, then Over The Hill takes the same approach to the likes of SnowRunner.

The art style of Art of Rally lends itself well to the off-road scenery with some tweaks, and the built-in photo mode to capture some of the beautiful minimalist landscapes. And while there are objectives to complete as a way to unlock new vehicles, updates and cosmetics, along with hidden portals to travel to new areas, Over The Hill is much more about gentle exploration than most other off-road games and sims.
That includes parking up and pitching a campsite for a break, which sounds like a fun way to chill out in multiplayer. As much as I love existing titles like MudRunner and SnowRunner in co-op, some of my family and friends do get a little stressed out by some of the complexity in tackling particular objectives or challenges, especially when you find out you’ve hauled the wrong trailer halfway across a map. The idea of a more gentle and cute exploration game sounds like the perfect way to spend a nice evening without as much shouting that someone forgot to add a spare fuel can.
And as the trailer shows, there’s still some great advantages to working together, particularly when you’re being winched out of trouble. The most recent collaboration between Funselektor and Strelka Games is minimalist motorsport management title, Golden Lap, which was released in September 2024. Literally the only detail now is whether it will include split-screen multiplayer for couch co-op.
Over The Hill is available to wishlist on Steam for the PC, which has been done by more than 200,000 people already. And we’ll update the links when console versions become available, along with keeping track of all the latest Over The Hill news, updates and DLC, here.
