GTRevival Gets A New Name, Publisher, And Game Engine

There are some big changes happening to the PC and console racing sim coming from Straight4 Studios, as GTRevival gets a new name, publisher, and game engine.

Progress updates from the developer have slowed recently, which is explained by some substanital changes. The first was CEO Ian Bell revealing that the requirement for the sim to have VR and be released on Oculus Rift meant moving away from Unreal and onto a new engine. It’ll be interesting to find out what that might be, given Bell and many of the Straight4 team were previously at Slightly Mad Studios, the developers of Project CARS, and their own Madness engine.

It’s also now been revealed that the existing publishing deal with Plaion is not going ahead. We previously wondered if this might be impacted by the recent changes at Embracer Group, as it separates into three standalone entities following financial challenges.

And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also going to be a new name for the racing sim. Having originally been announced as GTR Revival, harking back to a substantial number of the team working on the GTR titles as well as Project CARS, it then became GTRevival.

Having been originally scheduled for release in Q4 2024, the new name and publisher are planned to be announced in July, with plans for a launch date currently not being revealed. One agreement which also hasn’t been mentioned in a long time was the strategic partnership with Reiza Studios. So, could this come back into play in some way? Slightly Mad were bought up by Codemasters, who were then acquired in turn by Electronic Arts, and the Project CARS series was discontinued. Which does raise the question of whether licensing the Madness engine, or even the franchise name, are even vague possibilities.

Given that early gameplay footage was already being shared back in 2023, we’ll have to wait and see if the changes add much time to the launch date. But you can keep up with the latest news and updates on the game soon to be formerly known as GTRevival, here.
