With a real car revealed at the CES Show by the tech mobility venture formed by the two companies, it’s not entirely surprising to see that the Sony Honda Afeela EV is coming to Gran Turismo 7 some time in 2024.
Sony showcased a car back in 2022, but is now set to enter production next year in partnership with Honda. And it uses 45 cameras and sensors, a media bar to express itself to people around it, augmented reality, AI, a conversational personal agent being developed by Microsoft, and a collaboration with Epic Games for entertainment, along with Unreal Engine 5 for the interior displays.
What’s more interesting for sim racers is that the Afeela Prototype 2024 will be included in a patch update for Gran Turismo in 2024, ahead of the release of the vehicle. And that’s part of a new partnership between Sony Honday Mobility and Polyphony Digital in vehicle development to create new value and develop vehicles that ‘fuse the virtual and the real’ by ‘combining Polyphony Digital’s simulation technology with the development of actual vehicles by SHM’
It’s not the first time Polyphony Digital has collaborated with car manufacturers, after working with Nissan on the Hyper Force concept user interface and telemtry graphics for the Nissan GT-R R35. But with the Sony Honda Afeela driven on stage remotely via a DualSense PS5 controller, and the concept that the car is moving ‘from power and performance to software, networks, and user experiences’ it’ll be interesting to see how the sim racing and real worlds increasingly converge.
