The Gran Turismo Vision collaborations have been around for a long time, and we’ve mentioned previous examples, and partnerships with companies like Porsche. Now the 1,005 horsepower, 200mph+ electric Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe has appeared, and will come to Gran Turismo Sport for free in November 2019.
And it looks like it’ll be an interesting car to drive. The three electric motors are located with one on the front axle, and on each rear wheel. Which means you get all-wheel drive, 885 lb fot of torque, and the same lithium-ion battery used in the I-PACE eTROPHY. And a 0-62mph time of under 2 seconds.
Which is pretty impressive as a virtual design based on real-world and future technology by Jaguar Advanced Design. For example, the battery technology may be based on current advances, but the module is placed around the cockpit of the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe, to allow the stunning design, a low centre of gravity, and perfect weight distribution.
But it also looks stunning. Legendary Jaguar cars including the C, D and E-Types inspired the exterior and driver cockpit. Although the front view does remind me more of the early 1990s Jaguar XJ220 which used a 3.5 litre twin-turbocharged V6 to be the fastest production car of the time with a 212.3mph top speed. And it also spawned the pretty good 1993 Jaguar XJ220 racing game for the Amiga and Sega Mega-CD developed by Core Design – which can be found for a reasonable price on ebay. Which I remember liking at the time on the Amiga, and now have to go and purchase again…
Back to the present and the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe. One of the impressive things about the cars designed for the game is the amount of effort and detail which goes into the cockpits and driving experience.
In this case the idea was the emulate the driver being enveloped by the cockpit of the famous Le Mans-winning Jaguar D-Type. You also get a lot of advanced materials used in the dashboard and around the driver, with a mix of analog and digital details and controls. Plus there’s even an electric roof hatch to get in and out.
That’s before you spot the hologram technology, and an artificial intelligence named ‘KITT-E’ as your interface and companion. Plus to help your side view, there are augemented reality displays on the doors….
The carbon-fibre monocoque and all the lightweight materials keep the weight down to around 3,150lbs.
And to complete the experience the sound of the car is based on recordings of a Jaguar D-Type 3.8-litre six cylinder race engine.
