Gran Turismo 5 servers to close in May, 2014

Sony has announced the servers powering the online component of Gran Turismo 5 will be closed on May 20, 2014. You’ll still be able to play all offline modes, but you’ll otherwise need to make the leap to Gran Turismo 6.

GT5 was originally announced in 2005, and was eventually released on November 24th, 2010. As the best-selling PS3 exclusive game, with sales of more than 10 million, there are plenty of people who have enjoyed the 16-player online racing. It’s a little surprising that the servers are already being shut, considering the 1000+ cars, 26 locations and 71 tracks to still enjoy, plus the long-running online challenges and the qualifiers for the GT Academy program.

Still with Gran Turismo 6 released for the Playstation 3 on December 6th, 2013, and the inevitable move to the Playstation 4 for the next game in the season, it’s probably in the interests of Sony to move racers over to the latest game in the series.

So on May 20, 2014, GT5 joins the other Sony racing games which can now only be enjoyed in the privacy of your own home.

Other decommissioned racing games on Playstation:

Playstation 3:

  • Call All Cars
  • Formula One Championship Edition
  • Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
  • MotorStorm
  • MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
  • Race Driver: GRID

Playstation 2:

  • WRC 4 – The Official Game of the FIA World Rally Championship
  • WRC: Rally Evolved
  • Formula One 05
  • Destruction Derby Arenas
  • F1 ’04
  • Twisted Metal: Black Online

PSP:

  • Twisted Metal: Head-on
  • MotorStorm Arctic Edge
  • WipEout Pulse

So it’s time to get as much Gran Turismo 5 action in as possible for May!
