Project CARS Weekly Update – Build 567

September 25, 2013 By Andy ORD Leave a Comment

The heightened involvement of the CARS community since the migration to Steam persists with access to daily versions for Team Members and above.  Away from the minutiae of build changes, the Car Physics Focus Testing (CPFT) drives onward with its weekly car and track selections.

Week 10 of the CPFT concentrates on the couplings below.  The current set will be replaced on Friday, the 27th of September.

  • Ariel Atom 300 – Heusden
  • Racer V8 – Dubai Emirates Raceway GP
  • Formula C – Florence Short

Here’s the week-closing latest build and a gathering of earlier highlights.

Build 567 (20/9/13, Team Member+)

Physics:

Ariel Atom 3 and the Evon CR500 tyre.  Tried to make this tyre more camber-sensitive and believable with the tyre-heating temperature spreads with camber adjustment.  In doing so, some of the tyre stiffness feel was lost so there was a sidewall stiffness increase (using bow stiffness) adjustment to compensate and it all works rather nicely.  These changes also affect the Caterham Classic and Caterham R500.

Environment:

Puddles build-up and drying rates altered.

Puddle and wet track build-up edits.

Wet road texture saved as ARGB to remove the blocky puddle edges.  Other channels also tweaked to reduce the over-the-top wet road.

Build 566 (19/9/13, Team Member+)

Vehicles:

Mercedes SLS GT3: New suspension geometry and other changes to work with that.

Ruf RGT-8: Wider selection of springs. New rear suspension geometry.

Ruf RGT-8: New dampers and some other set-up tweaks.

Formula Gulf: Tweaked driver animation: less crossed arms during steering.

Formula Gulf: Steering animation tweaked, right hand leaves the wheel sooner.

Build 565 (18/9/13, Team Member+)
Weather System:
Dynamic puddles size implementation, drying and water build-up rates.
Dynamic puddles size support, puddles soft edges.

Build 562 (13/9/13, Team Member+)

Physics:

GT3 Slick: Fixed excessive wear on the soft and hard compounds.  Still not truly calibrated for realistic wear rate.

Re-worked tyres pressures and build-up on the Caterham and Ariel tyres to better match the listed pressures used.

Build 561 (12/9/13, Team Member+)

Physics (Tyres):

FlexiCarcass development, FFB tightening options, Monza-kinda thermal experiment on HUD tyre widget (for FC).

GT3 and Group A slick tyres: Updates based on CPFT feedback.

Vehicles:

BMW Z4 GT3: Tweaks to default set-up and an experiment with the tyre scrub override sound parameter.

Caterham R500 and Classic: Fixed track bar being above the axle centre-line (and hence, rear roll centre).  This fixes most of the up-on-2-wheels experienced.  Re-adjusted set-up accordingly (this added understeer).  Raised default tyre pressures and adjusted the optimum pressure shapes.  Some drop in Flash tyre temp on the R500.

Build 558 (9/9/13, Team Member+)

Audio:

All-new Pagani Huayra in-car and external engine sets, plus an AI version.  Update includes extra layers of hard-offloaded exhaust crackles and a unique pulley whine.  Includes the latest distant roll-offs and trajectory.  N.B. The int/ext backfires and gear shifts require bespoke sounds.  I’ll add these over the next couple of days.  Please take the time to listen to the lower RPM details – especially from track-side – short-shifting and cruising around slowly is a lot of fun THEN hit the gas and hang on!

As always whenever you’ve run a previous version, don’t forget to delete the profile file located in Documents/CARS before running a new build for the first time.  Even if it’s a daily revision!

Slightly Mad’s Project CARS is scheduled as an all-formats release for next year – currently for the PC and each of the current consoles.
