Simraceway is here again and we’re running at Kent’s Brands Hatch Circuit. This over-before-you-know-it run covers the longer Grand Prix layout. The car is Emerson Fittipaldi’s 1973 race and Constructors Championship-winning Lotus 72.
Though their individual driving campaigns were hampered by several retirements between them, Fittipaldi and his team-mate, Ronnie Peterson, would drive to success for the constructors’ prize through victories and regular podium placings. The sad withdrawal of the Tyrrell team during the season-closing weekend of the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen also played its part.
With only a sole retirement in Spain, more wins than the Lotus drivers and a comparatively consistent set of race results, Jackie Stewart would become World Champion for the third and final time.
A long-time campaigner for safety and medical response improvements in and around Formula One, Stewart would continue with his advocacy even with F1 behind him as a driver. He was also later well-known as a motor sport commentator and consultant for Ford before becoming a Formula One team owner in 1997 with Stewart Grand Prix.
Following its sale to the motor manufacturer a few years later, the Stewart team would be re-branded as Jaguar Racing before being bought by the Austrian energy drink company to begin the 2005 season as Red Bull Racing.
